What Makes a Good Automatic GMT Watch?

A GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) watch is designed to display multiple time zones simultaneously, making it an essential tool for globetrotters and business professionals. But not all GMT watches are created equal. Here’s what to look for in a high-quality automatic GMT watch:

  • Reliable Movement: The heart of any automatic watch is its movement. A good GMT watch should have a precise and durable movement, whether it’s Swiss, Japanese, or German. Look for movements with a reputation for accuracy and longevity.

  • Build Quality: Premium materials like stainless steel, sapphire crystal, and ceramic bezels ensure durability and scratch resistance. A well-crafted case and bracelet also add to the watch’s overall appeal.

  • Ease of Use: A good GMT watch should be intuitive to use. Features like a rotating bezel or world city ring make it easy to track multiple time zones.

  • Design and Legibility: The dial should be clean and easy to read, with clear markings for the GMT function. Luminous hands and markers are a bonus for low-light visibility.

  • Water Resistance: While not all GMT watches are dive watches, a decent level of water resistance (at least 100 meters) ensures versatility and durability.

At Monro Adventure, we offer a curated collection of automatic GMT watches that combine precision, style and functionality. Whether you’re a frequent traveler or a watch collector, our GMT watches have something for everyone.

How to Use an Automatic GMT Watch

Using an automatic GMT watch might seem intimidating at first, but it’s surprisingly simple once you understand the basics. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Set the Local Time: Use the crown to set the main hour and minute hands at your local destination.

  2. Set the GMT Hand: The GMT hand takes 24 hours to complete one full turn and is used to represent a second time zone. Use the crown to set this hand at the desired 24 hour time. If the local time is 10:10am then it should point to 10 on the bezel, if it's 10:10pm then it should point to 22.
  3. Second Time Zone: To set and use the GMT hand as a second time zone on the Monro Adventure, rotate the world city ring by using the crown at 2 o'clock.  Line up your current location to the local time on the bezel. If you're in the UK, line up LONDON to 10. Then set the GMT hand to line up to your desired destination. The GMT hand now shows the time at your destination by reading the 24 hour markers on the bezel. 10:10 in London, 18:10 in Hong Kong for example.

  4. Use the Rotating Bezel: Many GMT watches feature a rotating bezel with 24-hour markings. Align the bezel with the GMT hand to track a third time zone.

  5. Wind the Watch (if necessary): Automatic watches are powered by movement, but if your watch has been idle for a while, give it a few manual winds to get it started.

  6. Wear and Enjoy: Once set, your GMT watch will keep track of your time zones effortlessly.

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling, adjust the GMT hand to your home time zone and use the regular hour hand for local time. This way, you’ll always know what time it is back home.
